Leon Levy Preserve

Woodland Trail, Leon Levy Preserve, South Salem, New YorkThe Leon Levy Preserve is a 386-acre preserve located south and west from the intersection of Routes 35 and 123 in South Salem, New York and lies in the watersheds of both the New York City and Stamford drinking water supplies. The purchase is being made possible because of a $5 million contribution from the Jerome Levy Foundation; $1 million each from the Town of Lewisboro and the New York City Department of Environmental Protection; and $500,000 over five years from the Dextra Baldwin McGonagle Foundation.

Protection of the land has been a goal of local preservationists for years, because of its size and location, its hiking trails, its watershed protection value and its wildlife habitat. The preserve contains a diverse array of wetlands, stream systems, rocky hills, a large ravine, and mature second growth forest.

The preserve contains an extensive system of hiking trails, including an old carriage trail, and is open to town residents for hiking, snowshoeing, biking, and horseback riding.
