The
111th Annual Christmas Bird Count
Sunday, December 19: Greenwich-Stamford
Sunday, January 2: Putnam County Count
The Audubon Christmas Bird Count (CBC) is the world’s largest and oldest citizen
science project. Counts are conducted in all 50 states and in all 13 provinces
and territories of Canada as well as other countries in North and South America.
The individual count data are vital in order to make a collective assessment of
the overall health of the avian community at that time of year. Each count is
held within a circle with a 15-mile radius in a variety of habitats including
forest, field, swamp, stream, and lake in search of wintering birds. Both bird
species and individual numbers will be recorded. The $5 participation fee helps
cover many of the CBC’s costs including production of the annual CBC summary
issue of American Birds, which all participants will receive. A potluck
dinner concludes the count. Both experienced birders and novices are encouraged
to participate.
The CBC is a whole-day event. Two counts will be conducted in
our area. To sign up for the Greenwich CBC, which will be held on Sunday,
December 19, please contact Brian O’Toole, botoole@audubon.org (or 203-869-5272
ext. 228). Charlie Roberto, chasrob@optonline.net
(or 914-271-0840) will be the compiler for the Putnam County CBC, which will be
held on Sunday, January 2. To learn more about the
