Bedford Audubon Receives Gift from Baur FamilyJune 16, 2001
The Bedford Audubon Society has received a gift of $21,500 from the children of Jack and Louisa Baur, longtime residents of Lewisboro. The funds will be used to establish a hiking trail from Todd Road into the Society's Hunt Sanctuary and to maintain other trails within the preserve. The Baur family chose Bedford Audubon as the recipient of the gift because they wanted the funds to be used locally for conservation of natural resources. On May 12, the Baur children Jean, Arthur, and Susan gathered with family and friends to celebrate the gift and their parents. According to John Askildsen, president of the Society, "The day went off perfectly. Even the untimely spring rains of that day could not dampen the spirits of this momentous occasion." Jack and Louisa Baur moved to their home on Mount Holly Road in the 1940s, reared their three children, were active participants in the community, and resided in the area for over 40 years. Jean Baur, their daughter, fondly recalls being part of a "stable, unchanging community on Mount Holly Road in her childhood. Because the Baur home sat on a hilltop, the family could see the mountains west of the Hudson from their windows. Ms Baur said, "My parents loved hiking and being in the woods," so a hiking trail is an appropriate memorial to them. Members of the community can contribute to the Baur Memorial Fund. Once the trail is established, a marker will identify it as the Louisa and Jack Baur Memorial Trail.
